ITEM 9609. MASTER SNUFF BOTTLE,
golden olive amber, rectangular with beveled edges, pontil scar,
6 5/16"H, sheared and tooled mouth, mint. American. Probably
blown at a New England Glass House, 1820-1840. Rare size.
Holly and I have collected New England utility bottles for roughly
two decades and over that time we have seen no more than a handful
of these oversized snuffs. This fine example has Stew Putney
provenance and it is a spectacular piece of glass with good transparency
and loads of tiny bubbles. The bottle is in undamaged, attic
quality condition. Please see the photo below to better understand
the stature of this impressively sized bottle as compared to
a typical snuff of the period.
