ITEM 6987. "GENL TAYLOR
NEVER SURRENDERS" / CANNON - "A / LITTLE / MORE / GRAPE
/ CAPT BRAGG" / CLUSTER OF GRAPES, (McK# GX-4), aquamarine,
pontil scar, pint, crudely sheared and fire polished mouth, mint.
American, probably blown at the Baltimore Glass Works, C. 1848,
scarce.
Branded a "hero" after commanding our troops at the
Battle of Buena Vista, General Zachary Taylor 's popularity rose
to a peak during the Presidential Election of 1848. Nearly forty
different flasks with Taylor's embossed were created during the
election, including this attractive Baltimore made flask. The
embossed lettering of "A little more grape Captain Bragg"
is a reference to a remark made by Taylor at the Battle of Buena
Vista that was popularized and well documented in the papers
of the day. Scarce in any condition, the GX-4 flasks are often
damaged, heavily worn and/or poorly embossed. This SUPERB example
excels in all regards and it would be right at home in the finest
of collections.
