RARE PITTSBURGH BLOWN GLASS PITCHER WITH APPLIED GLASS BANDS

ITEM 6821. SMALL BLOWN GLASS PITCHER, clear, cylindrical with three bands of glass wrapped around mid-body and an applied solid glass handle with rigaree, pontil scar, 4 9/16"H, tooled mouth with pour spout, mint. American, probably blown at a Pittsburgh Glass House, C. 1840, rare.

Unusual in its construction, this is the first time we have encountered a pitcher embellished with applied glass bands. The technique creates and effect not unlike the mercurial band seen on earlier Thomas Caines objects and it could have been successful only in the hands of a master gaffer.
