ITEM 6566. UTILITY JAR, deep
olive green, two-piece mold cylinder, sand chip pontil scar,
5 ½"H, crudely applied mouth, about mint (partially
open bubble at the base edge). New England, 1830-1850, rare.
Although these rare jars were at one time thought to have been
blown at Mount Vernon I have gradually come to believe that they
were in fact blown in Connecticut, probably at Coventry. Of the
handful of examples we have encountered over the years this is
to my eye the most appealing, primarily a result of the outrageously
crude mouth treatment. Although dark, the glass does pass light,
revealing a myriad of tiny bubbles and swirl lines.
