ITEM 6554. "ST / DRAKES
/ 1860 / PLANTATION / X / BITTERS - PATENTED / 1862", (Ring#
D110), clear, brilliant yellow with a distinct greenish tone,
figural 4-log cabin, smooth base, 10 3/4"H x 2 1/2"W,
applied sloping collar, sparkling attic mint. American, 1865-1875,
rare color.
Over the years I have seen plenty of four log Drakes catalogued
as "yellow," nearly all of which actually showed a
good dose of amber. It is a pleasure then, to present this truly
YELLOW four log Drakes, which I would doggedly argue is as fine
an example as is known. The bottle is a recently discovered,
attic quality example that has not previously been included in
an established collection. There is no wear, damage or staining
and the label panels are highly whittled. In direct sun the bottle
shows as purely yellow - afternoon light reveals strong green
(not olive) toning. There is no lighting situation in which amber
can be found. I fully understand that many of the bitters collectors
are currently preparing for an auction battle but for those who
seek the very best, this is one that you can't afford to miss.
