ITEM 5990. BLOWN THREE MOLD DECANTER
WITH MATCHING ACORN STOPPER STOPPER, (McK# GIII-2 Type 2), clear
flint glass, pontil scar, quart, outwardly flared mouth, a mint
bottle with a few wisps of light interior haze. American, 1820-1840,
a scarce decanter with a rare stopper.
It has been proposed that acorn stoppers were used for special
orders and that they were never intended to "match"
any particular blown three mold pattern. With that said, the
metal and fit of this stopper seem to indicate with near certainty
that the two pieces started out their life together and that
they are in fact a matching pair. As shown, the stopper and well
blown decanter work beautiful together, striking a handsome pose
and elevating the whole from good to GREAT.
