ITEM 5676A. SNUFF JAR, bright
yellow olive, square, pontil scar, 6"H x 2 7/8"square,
sheared and fire polished mouth, mint. American, probably blown
at an early Connecticut Glass Houses, 1790-1820, extremely rare
size.
Towering over others of its type, this mammoth snuff jar is one
of only a handful we have encountered in more than ten years
of actively collecting New England utility bottles. As with the
other jars of this rough size that we have seen, the bottle is
blown with the aid of a dip mold and in this instance, the mold
was marked with a distinct cross on the base. This is not something
I can recall seeing in the past and it does not match the base
of either of the large snuffs in our own collection.
