ITEM 5653. "BOSS' / PATENT"
UMBRELLA - TYPE INK, deep aquamarine, unusual corset-waisted
six-sided form, pontil scar, 2 7/8"H, inwardly rolled mouth,
mint. American, C. 1850, very rare.
Recently discovered at a local flea market, this rare and beautiful
ink is the first we have had the pleasure of offering. Not listed
by Covill, examples of this ink were found in the collections
of both Bob Heath and Watt White but many of the major ink collectors
are still without a specimen of this unusual embossed pontil
ink. I have heard it said that the Boss' was blown at Lockport
and Lancaster and though that is certainly possible, we have
hedged our bets and simply catalogued the piece as "American."
