ITEM 5581. BLOWN THREE
MOLD CELERY VASE, (McK GV-21), clear flint glass, ground pontil
scar, 8 ¼"H, tooled rim, a mint vase with some manufacturer's
"crizzling" within the bowl. American, probably blown
at the Bakewell, Page and Bakewell Glass House, Pittsburgh, PA,
1824-1828, rare.
Although I have seen this rare
blown three mold article attributed to Sandwich, both Arlene
Palmer and Lowell Innes have documented this to be a Pittsburgh
product. Among the rarest and most attractive forms in which
blown three mold can be found, this fine celery vase would truly
be a centerpiece for any advanced collection of early glass.
Interestingly, all of the GV-21 celery vases I have seen exhibited
some degree of glass crizzling, presumably indicative of an unstable
glass batch. Palmer documents this issue in her latest book
on Pittsburgh Glass and in doing so, pinpoints the date of manufacture
to the 1824 to 1828 period.
