ITEM 5318. WHALE OIL LAMP, clear
flint glass, blown-molded font attached with a four-ringed wafer
to a stepped octagonal pressed base, pontil scar, 8"H, tooled
mouth, a mint lamp with some base edge roughness as is typical
of the pressing process. American, probably blown at the New
England Glass Company, Cambridge, MA, C. 1850, extremely rare.
This unusual lamp is a glassmaker's tour de force, exhibiting
a seamless transition between blown and pressed elements. Our
New England Glass Company attribution is supported by known products
of this company with the same pressed base.
