GOLDEN AMBER BLOWN SOUTH JERSEY CANDLESTICK - MINT

ITEM 5307. CANDLESTICK, golden amber, hollow foot with ball knopf and drawn socket with everted rim, pontil scar, 4 5/8"H, sheared and tooled mouth, mint. American, probably blown at the Whitney Glass Works, Glassboro, NJ, C. 1870.

Although it may also be what McKearin referred to as a "low vase" it seems much more probable that this well-proportioned piece was originally intended for use as a candlestick. Drawn from a single gather of glass, this stick is quite similar to objects McKearin attributes to Stoddard and or Westford but it is more likely that this piece is South Jersey in origin. Dating objects of this type is difficult and although the piece does not exhibit tremendous wear it is DEFINITELY "right" and quite possibly earlier than we have noted.
