ITEM# 4003. PINWHEEL SCENT BOTTLE, (Ham's H6-6), deep aquamarine, circular with corrugated ribbing and pinwheel design, tubular pontil scar, 2 1/8"H, inwardly rolled mouth, mint. American, 1820-1840, very rare. This exceptional "pinwheel"
scent bottle is quite a rare piece and the bottle predates those
essence bottles colloquially referred to as "Sandwich"
colognes. Used both as a means of masking odors and reviving
ladies from the fainting spells caused by the tight corsets of
the day, cologne (and thus bottles of this type) was carried
by 19th century women of all economic levels. Still, the fancier
cologne bottles such as this beautifully designed piece were
probably most often carried by the upper classes. |
