REDWARE STORAGE JAR WITH COVER

ITEM 3490. REDWARE STORAGE JAR WITH COVER (PROBABLY MISMATCHED), clear lead glaze with copper oxide streaking, straight sided cylinder, 6"H x 4 1/2"D, some lip edge chipping. Found in Maine but the jar could also be Western New York State or Vermont in origin, mid 19th century.

This fine redware jar is fitted with a wonderful cover with an excellent glaze match. The cover however, is incised with "115" and the jar is not, so it is most likely that theirs is a later marriage. The finely speckled appearance of the glaze is similar to documented jars from Maine, Vermont and Western New York State and although this example was found in Maine, it could conceivably have traveled their from either Vermont or Western New York.
