RARE COLORLESS GIII-16 BLOWN THREE MOLD KEENE, NH DECANTER WITH STOPPER

ITEM 3312. BLOWN THREE MOLD DECANTER WITH PERIOD STOPPER, (McK# GIII-16), colorless, pontil scar, 9 5/8"H with stopper, flared mouth, mint. Keene Marlboro Street Glass Works, Keene, NH, 1820-1840, rare color for this mold.

Though relatively common in shades of olive and amber, the GIII-16 Keene decanter is only rarely seen in clear glass and thus it was quite a surprise to find this piece at a local estate auction. The decanter for some reason appeared eerily familiar and in checking through our references, we found what appears to be the exact decanter pictured in Helen McKearin's August 1937 Magazine Antiques article, "Dispelling the Stoddard Myth." It is a stretch, perhaps, to believe that the two bottles are one in the same but the resemblance is so strong, maybe, just maybe…
