ITEM 1998. REDWARE TANKARD, lead
glazed speckled with flecks of manganese, barrel shaped with
molded turnings and applied handle with thumbprint at lower terminal,
finely potted and thinly walled, 6 3/8"H x 4 1/4"D,
as found, scattered rim chips and a long through line extending
downward from the top of the rim. American, probably New England,
late 18th or early 19th century, scarce form.
This finely potted and delicately thrown redware tankard features
bold turnings and a pleasing form. As with the great majority
of utilitarian objects crafted in this medium, the tankard does
exhibit some damage but it displays beautifully. The tankard's
thin walls are indicative of particularly early manufacture and
it is quite possible that this fine piece of tableware was potted
in the Eighteenth Century.
