ITEM# 1289. EAGLE - FLAG / "FOR
OUR COUNTRY.", (McK# GII-54), brilliant golden amber, tubular
pontil scar, pint, sheared and tooled mouth, about mint (shallow
¼" open bubble at the lip edge). Coffin and Hay Manufactory,
Hammondton, NJ, 1836-1847, extremely rare color.
Though common in aqua, the GII-54 mold is extremely rare in shades
of amber, with only a handful of known examples. This fine specimen
was recently purchased from a Maine auction and it is "fresh"
to the market. And, unlike most of the other known specimens
(which are typically dark and described as "chocolate"
or "tobacco" amber), this flask passes light with ease,
glowing with tones of yellow and gold. The mold impression is
exceptional (with the flag's detailing especially bold) and as
noted by McKearin, this is one of only seven charted flasks emblazoned
with this traditional Patriotic motif. Definite attribution can
be made to the Coffin & Hay Glass Works of Hammondton, NJ
with the flask dating to the 1836 to 1847 period. The flask appears
today almost exactly as it did when leaving the factory with
only nominal wear and no post-manufacture damage. The flask's
only "flaw" is a 1/4" bubble on the edge of the
lip that is open at the surface and paper thin - this is obviously
an in-house condition and it does not markedly detract from the
value or appearance of this exceptional flask.
